Every Idea YouRead FinallyHas a Home

Carrel keeps your papers, highlights, notes, claims and drafts in one workspace — and every answer it gives you points back to the page it came from.

Everything you need to transform research into knowledge

01Library and import

The Carrel library: papers with authors, venue, reading status and time left, above the upload, DOI and Zotero import options

Every paper you have, in one searchable library.

Drop in PDFs, paste a DOI or arXiv id, or import your Zotero library with its collections. Each paper is parsed, enriched from Crossref and OpenAlex, and ready to read, search and cite.

02Smart PDF reader

The reader: a paper with coloured highlights, the notes panel beside it, and find in document

Built for researchers who read beyond the abstract.

Highlight in four colours, keep notes on the page, and ask for an explanation of any passage in the context of the paper. The reader remembers where you stopped and how long is left.

03AI research assistant

A research thread: a question, a cited answer and the sources panel listing papers and pages

Ask your library anything. Get answers you can verify.

Answers are grounded in your own papers, every sentence carries a citation, and a click opens the passage in the reader at that page. When the evidence is not there, the assistant says so.

04Research graph

The research graph: papers and extracted claims connected by citation and support edges

See how every claim in your research connects.

Claims, methods and findings are extracted from your papers with their exact quotes, linked by citations and by what they support or contradict, and the gaps between them are flagged for review.

05Writing workspace

The writing workspace: a document with citation chips, the sources panel and the bibliography

Write with your sources at your fingertips.

Draft with inline citations in APA, MLA, Chicago, IEEE or Nature, check every claim against the page it cites, draft from selected evidence, and export to Markdown, LaTeX or Word.

Ask anything. Every answer cites its source.

Can you explain this in simpler terms?

AI Insight

This section introduces a sparse attention mechanism that helps the model focus only on the most relevant tokens instead of all of them. By doing this, it reduces the amount of computation and memory required while still maintaining performance.

Talk to us
What counts as a cited answer?
One question to the research assistant, answered from your own papers with page citations. Reading, highlighting and searching are never metered.
Do I have to leave Zotero?
No. Import a library or a few collections with their PDFs whenever you like; papers already in Carrel are skipped, so the import can be run again.
Who can see my papers?
Only you and the members of the projects you share. PDFs live in private storage behind expiring links, and you can export or delete everything at any time.
